Men’s Hair Loss

Men’s hair loss can be caused by genetics, hormonal changes, medical conditions, medications, or the natural aging process. Although anyone can experience hair thinning, men are more likely to develop noticeable hair loss earlier in life.

The most common form of hair loss in men is male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). It typically starts with a receding hairline or thinning at the crown and progresses gradually over time. This pattern differs from women, who usually experience overall thinning at the top of the scalp.

Creatine supplements are often blamed for hair loss, but current scientific evidence does not support a direct link between creatine use and baldness.

Wearing hats does not directly cause hair loss. However, consistently wearing extremely tight or poorly ventilated hats may stress hair follicles by reducing airflow or blood circulation. Any resulting shedding is usually temporary.

High testosterone levels alone do not cause hair loss. The primary factor is dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone derived from testosterone. In men who are genetically sensitive to DHT, hair follicles gradually shrink, leading to thinner hair and eventual hair loss.

There is no solid evidence that shampoo, pomade, gel, or other styling products directly cause hair loss. While some ingredients may irritate the scalp or dry out hair, they do not damage hair follicles enough to cause permanent baldness.

The long-term effects of vaping are still being studied. Some research suggests vaping may increase oxidative stress in the body, which could theoretically contribute to hair thinning. More research is needed to fully understand this connection.

Several medications are commonly used to treat male pattern baldness:

• Minoxidil (Rogaine®)

  Available as an oral prescription tablet and in topical forms such as foam or solution. Minoxidil helps stimulate hair growth and slow hair loss. Topical versions are typically applied once or twice daily.

• Finasteride (Propecia®)

  A daily oral prescription medication that reduces DHT levels. Many men see slowed hair loss and, in some cases, regrowth after several months of consistent use.

• Dutasteride (Avodart®)

  Sometimes prescribed off-label, dutasteride also lowers DHT and may be effective for men who do not respond to finasteride.

Shampoo alone cannot stop hair loss, but certain ingredients can support scalp health. Look for moisturizing formulas that contain ketoconazole, which may help reduce scalp inflammation and limit DHT activity on the scalp.

Stress-related hair loss is called telogen effluvium. It often begins two to three months after a stressful event, illness, or major life change.

• Acute stress hair loss usually lasts less than six months and resolves on its own in most cases.
• Chronic stress hair loss lasts longer than six months and may cause widespread thinning rather than bald spots.

Addressing the underlying stressor is key. Hair regrowth typically occurs within six to eight months, and treatments like minoxidil or nutritional supplements may help support recovery.

Collagen may support hair health by providing amino acids and helping strengthen hair structure. While research on collagen and hair regrowth is limited, some men find it helpful for improving hair thickness and overall hair quality.
